Better Than Takeout

This is one of those recipes that really does hit like takeout, but better. It’s sweet, garlicky, a little sticky, and the chicken stays super juicy.

The biggest difference is it doesn’t feel heavy or overly saucy. You can control everything, how sweet you want it, how much sauce, and how it’s cooked. Honestly, once you make this at home, it’s hard to go back to ordering it.

How to Make Honey Garlic Chicken Marinade

The first step is to whisk together all the ingredients to make the honey garlic marinade. Secondly, you want to coat the chicken well and allow to marinate for awhile. After it has marinated, you can cook it on the grill or bake it in the oven until it is tender and juicy.

Step One (Make the marinade): In a bowl, whisk together the honey, soy sauce, olive oil, water, garlic, and fresh ginger until well combined.

Step Two (Marinate the chicken): Place the chicken in a shallow dish or bag. Pour the marinade over the chicken and turn to coat well. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight. When ready, cook the chicken however you like until fully cooked and slightly caramelized.

Cooking Guide

Pan-Seared Honey Garlic Chicken

Remove the chicken from the marinade and let any excess drip off. Discard the used marinade.

Heat a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook for 5–7 minutes per side, depending on thickness, until golden, slightly caramelized, and fully cooked through (internal temperature should reach 165°F).

Oven-Baked Honey Garlic Chicken

This is the easiest method and perfect for a quick weeknight dinner. The marinade keeps the chicken juicy while it bakes.

Prep and Bake: Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil. Place the marinated chicken on the baking sheet and bake for 18–22 minutes, depending on thickness, until fully cooked.

Rest and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the chicken rest for about 5 minutes before serving to keep it tender and juicy.

Air Fryer Honey Garlic Chicken

Cook at 375°F for 15–18 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden, caramelized, and fully cooked (165°F internal temperature).

My favorite cooking tip

Let excess marinade drip off before cooking so the chicken caramelizes instead of steaming!

How To Make It Crispy vs Saucy

You can make this honey garlic chicken a little different depending on what you’re in the mood for. It’s really easy to adjust.

If you want it crispy go lighter on the sauce while it cooks and let the chicken bake uncovered. This helps the edges caramelize and gives you that slightly sticky, crispy finish.

If you want it more saucy, keep a bit more sauce in the pan and spoon it over the chicken while it cooks. The sauce will thicken as it bakes and coat the chicken really nicely.

You can also let the sauce simmer for a few minutes at the end if you want it thicker and more glossy.

You can even do both, crispy edges with extra sauce on top right before serving.

Substitutions

  • Chicken: Use chicken thighs for juicier results or chicken breasts for a leaner option. Any cut works, just adjust cooking time.
  • Honey: Swap with maple syrup or brown sugar for a similar sweet glaze.
  • Soy sauce: Use tamari for gluten-free, or coconut aminos for a lighter option.
  • Olive oil: Any neutral oil works (avocado, canola, or vegetable oil).
  • Fresh garlic: Swap with garlic powder (about ½ tsp per clove), though fresh gives best flavor.
  • Fresh ginger: Use ground ginger if needed (about ¼ tsp), but fresh is more aromatic.

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Whisk or Spoon
  • Tongs
  • Meat Thermometer (Optional but helpful)
  • Frying Pan, Grill, Oven or Air Fryer

Storage & Meal Prep

Store cooked honey garlic chicken in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat gently with a splash of water or sauce to keep it juicy.

For meal prep, use it in rice bowls, wraps, salads, or noodles throughout the week.

You can also marinate the chicken ahead of time and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours before cooking for deeper flavor.

For longer storage, freeze the raw chicken in the marinade for up to 2 months, then thaw overnight in the fridge before cooking.

Recipe Tips

  • Marinate the chicken for at least 1 hour, or up to overnight for deeper flavor
  • Don’t skip letting excess marinade drip off before cooking for better caramelization
  • Cook on medium-high heat or high heat so the outside gets slightly caramelized and sticky
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan, oven tray, or air fryer basket, this helps the chicken cook evenly
