Soy Garlic Chicken Marinade (Better Than Takeout)
This soy garlic chicken marinade is sweet, savory, and packed with flavor. It makes chicken juicy, tender, and lightly caramelized whether you bake it, grill it, or air fry it.

It’s one of those recipes I come back to again and again because it makes dinner effortless. Just mix a few pantry staples, marinate the chicken, and cook when ready.
The combination of soy sauce, garlic, ginger, honey, and sesame oil creates a perfectly balanced sweet-savory flavor that tastes like takeout but is easier and lighter to make at home.

How To Cook Soy Garlic Chicken
Pan Method
Cook chicken in a heated pan over medium heat. Add chicken with marinade and cook until golden and fully cooked. Let sauce reduce and spoon over chicken before serving.

Oven Method
Bake at 400°F for 20–25 minutes until cooked and lightly caramelized.
Air Fryer Method
Cook at 375°F for 14–18 minutes, flipping halfway.
Grill Method
Grill over medium heat for 5–7 minutes per side until cooked and slightly charred.
My favorite cooking tip
Let excess marinade drip off before cooking so the chicken caramelizes instead of steaming!

Recipe Tips

FAQ
Can I use chicken breast instead of thighs?
Yes, just be careful not to overcook it, as chicken breast can dry out faster than thighs.
Is this recipe spicy?
No, it’s not spicy as written. You can add chilli flakes or a little sriracha if you want some heat.
Can I make this ahead of time?
Yes, but it’s best fresh. You can cook it ahead and store it, then reheat gently with a splash of water to loosen the sauce.
Can I double the recipe?
Yes, but cook the chicken in batches so it still browns properly instead of steaming.
What can I serve this with?
It’s great with rice, noodles, or simple steamed vegetables for an easy meal.
Variations
You can easily adjust this soy garlic chicken marinade to suit your taste. Here are some of my favorite variations that I like to rotate between:
1. Spicy Soy Garlic Chicken: just add extra chili flakes or a little sriracha sauce
2. Extra Sticky Version: just mix in more honey
3. Air Fryer Crispy Version: 375°F for 14–18 minutes, flip halfway, and drain excess marinade first
