Oven Method

Bake at 400°F for 20–25 minutes until cooked and lightly caramelized.

Air Fryer Method

Cook at 375°F for 14–18 minutes, flipping halfway.

Grill Method

Grill over medium heat for 5–7 minutes per side until cooked and slightly charred.

My favorite cooking tip

Let excess marinade drip off before cooking so the chicken caramelizes instead of steaming!

Substitutions

  • Chicken: Chicken thighs, chicken breast, or boneless skinless chicken (adjust cooking time so it doesn’t dry out).
  • Soy Sauce: Low-sodium soy sauce, tamari, or coconut aminos (slightly sweeter).
  • Honey: Brown sugar or white sugar.
  • Garlic: Garlic paste or garlic powder (use less).
  • Oil: Any neutral oil like vegetable or sunflower oil.

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Knife and Cutting Board
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Tongs or Spatula

Storage

Refrigerate. Store any leftover chicken in an airtight container and put it in the refrigerator within a couple of hours of cooking. You can reheat and enjoy for up to 3 days.

Reheat. You can reheat the chicken in the oven at 350°F or use the microwave if you’re in a rush. Either way, it stays juicy and flavorful.

Recipe Tips

  • Don’t skip sesame oil for depth of flavor
  • Chicken thighs stay juicier than breast
  • Let chicken sit 10 minutes before cooking for even results
  • Don’t overcrowd pan or air fryer for proper caramelization

FAQ

Can I use chicken breast instead of thighs?

Yes, just be careful not to overcook it, as chicken breast can dry out faster than thighs.

Is this recipe spicy?

No, it’s not spicy as written. You can add chilli flakes or a little sriracha if you want some heat.

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes, but it’s best fresh. You can cook it ahead and store it, then reheat gently with a splash of water to loosen the sauce.

Can I double the recipe?

Yes, but cook the chicken in batches so it still browns properly instead of steaming.

What can I serve this with?

It’s great with rice, noodles, or simple steamed vegetables for an easy meal.

Variations

You can easily adjust this soy garlic chicken marinade to suit your taste. Here are some of my favorite variations that I like to rotate between:

1. Spicy Soy Garlic Chicken: just add extra chili flakes or a little sriracha sauce

2. Extra Sticky Version: just mix in more honey

3. Air Fryer Crispy Version: 375°F for 14–18 minutes, flip halfway, and drain excess marinade first
